Message from the Rabbi

Dear Friend,

Last night I joined a classmate Shiva Call on zoom, for a friend who is sitting Shiva for his father, and can not have any actual visitors, due to corona. To make things more difficult, his wife is also sitting Shiva for her father. It was a sad reality of the trying times we are living in, but also an amazing assurance, that no matter what, some way or another, we are always able to connect.

This week’s Torah portion is Tzav, which means “command,” but in Aramaic it can also mean “connect,” because through fulfilling the commandments of the Torah we maintain and enhance our connection with G-d.

Let's all make sure, that whatever situation we find ourselves, no matter what, we can and must find ways to connect to Hashem. And of course to one another. And while this is true at all times, it's specifically at times like this, that we must remain connected.

The Shabbat before Passover is called “Shabbat Hagadol”—the great Shabbat. We hope and pray that this Shabbat indeed be the turning point in the current situation. Not only a return to life as it was before the pandemic, but greater beyond anyone’s imagination!

Shabbat Shalom & Stay Well,
Rabbi Moishe & Layah Kievman

PS If you know anyone stuck at home alone for the Seder and needs food, please let us know. If you can volunteer to bring people food & Matzah for the Seder, or are able to sponsor more meals or the quality of the meals please let us know.

Parshah in a Nutshell

Parshat Tzav

G‑d instructs Moses to command Aaron and his sons regarding their duties and rights as kohanim (“priests”) who offer the korbanot (animal and meal offerings) in the Sanctuary.

The fire on the altar must be kept burning at all times. In it are burned the wholly consumed ascending offering; veins of fat from the peace, sin and guilt offerings; and the “ handful” separated from the meal offering.

The kohanim eat the meat of the sin and guilt offerings, and the remainder of the meal offering. The peace offering is eaten by the one who brought it, except for specified portions given to the kohen. The holy meat of the offerings must be eaten by ritually pure persons, in their designated holy place and within their specified time.

Aaron and his sons remain within the Sanctuary compound for seven days, during which Moses initiates them into the priesthood.

Your Questions
Are Peanuts Kosher for Passover?
On Passover, Jews of Ashkenazic descent (and some Sefardic communities as well) do not eat anything that is considered “kitniyot.” Does this include the peanut?
